WE SHALL HOLD PRESIDENT BUHARI AND INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE KILLINGS OF NIGERIANS BY STATE AGENTS IN THIS ERA OF COVID-19

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) condemns in the strongest possible terms, the continued killing of Nigerian citizens by State Agents under the guise of enforcement of the lockdown order by the States and Federal Governments.

According to the Nigeria Center for Decease Control (NCDC), Covid-19 has claimed 12 lives: two before the lockdown order of 30th of March 2020, and 9 deaths since.

So in the course of the 17 days of lockdown so far, according to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), the Agents of the State, which comprises the Nigeria Police Force, the Correctional Service and the Nigeria Army, have collectively killed 18 Nigerians i.e 2 Nigerians have been killed by Law Enforcement Agents for every 1 killed by Coronavirus!.

The killings have become intolerable.

The law is clear on the circumstances under which law enforcement agents may resort to lethal use of firearms. Anything short of the legal standard is culpable homicide. It is provocative in the extreme for the pretence of commitment to enforce the lockdown directives to provide the license for trigger happy goons to take away the most fundamental of all humans rights, the right to life, so wantonly.

We know that armed Policemen and Soldier go out into the public on specific operational directives and orders. The rampancy with which these killings are taking place and the silence that has greeted same from the highest echelons, leave us with no choice but to conclude that the armed killers in uniform are carrying out the directives of Mr. President and the Inspector General of Police.

Even under a declaration of emergency, which is not the case in Nigeria, the right to life remains sacrosanct.

We use the opportunity of this Press Statement to affirm that sovereignty belongs to the Nigerian People and that at all times all those who enjoy the privilege of public office, albeit for a limited period, are accountable under the law.

The CDHR shall hold responsible every Policeman and Soldier involved in the killing of any Nigerian particularly during this era of Covid-19.

On this, we serve notice that Mr. President, General Muhammadu Buhari and the Inspector General of Police Mr. Abubakar Mohammed Adamu shall be held vicariously liable for all these unjustifiable killings at the appropriate time.

Comrade Gerald Katchy,

National Publicity Secretary,

CDHR.
